I, Dr. Devendra Mahadik have been working as a Cardio-Vascular and Thoracic Surgeon for last 20 years in Surat. In fact immediately after qualifying from Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, I settled in Surat. My aim was to provide services of my speciality to people of Surat, as they were almost non-existant at that time. I developed my speciality in all trust hospitals of Surat and concentrated more on Shri Mahavir General hospital, where I started Open Heart Surgery Programme in the year 1986. Our unit was first of its kind between Baroda to Bombay.
We did many operations for the first time in Gujarat i.e.1st Mitral Valve Replacement and 1st Total Correction for tetralogy of fallot. We have developed a good team work with a view to provide round-the-clock service to all operated patients. From time to time, We have organized diagnostic and cardiac surgical camps at Shri Mahavir General Hospital. In January '1999. We invited an American Team from Bloomington, Illinois, USA, lead by Dr. Brad smith.
Together, we performed 22 operations on needy patients with 100% success. Incidentally that was the time when Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery was performed for the first time in Surat. For doing Cardiac Surgery, our emphasis is on case selection, choice of procedure and excellent myocardial protection during surgery. Of course all patients are given individual post operative care to ensure high success rate.
Our septal superior approach for exposure of Mitral Valve and warm antegrade followed by retrograde cardiplegia offers excellent operative conditions for surgeon to do difficult Mitral Valve Repairs or Replacement.
We have devised a perfect, dependable technique to test the repaired Mitral Valve with left atrium still open. In fact we have achieved leak proof repairs due to this technique. For smaller children with patent ductus arteriosus our approach of Trans-axillary closure of ductus using mini thoracotomy has been widely appreciated by surgeons in this country and this has been accepted by paediatricians, who now refer PDA patients at an early age.
The advantages of our technique are small cosmetic scar hidden in axilla, short hospital stay and very little post operative pain. In keeping with changing times we strive to keep surgeries safe, short, effective and least traumatic to the patients. So that patients are up and about in few days after surgery.
