This Diagram shows two main approaches for bypass surgery, the midsternotomy route is standard for almost all open heart surgeries and bypass surgeries. Left anterior thoracotomy is used for MIDCAB (i.e. minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass). Midsternotomy is also used for OPCAB i.e. off pump coronary artery bypass.
